It’s always a joy to see your furry, feathered or finned friends. They’re such great companions for our whole family. But before you bring them home, make sure they meet these requirements: -Your pet must be spayed/neutered and vaccinated against rabies by 4 months of age; You can’t feed your pets human food; and-You need to keep the animal’s water dish full at all times.
Important Things to know when Adopting Pets
In general, owning a pet comes with many responsibilities. If you are responsible enough to provide for its basic needs- food, shelter, clean living conditions- then you should have no problem meeting the minimum legal requirement necessary in order to maintain a pet without being penalized by authorities. To learn about what these requirements are in your area, please consult the following guide:
Alabama All animals must show current vaccination records upon entering or leaving the state. These records can be obtained from a veterinarian. Animals must also be licensed within 30 days of moving into a city.
Animal lovers in Alabama have the option of being licensed as a commercial pet breeder or a hobby breeder.
Alaska All animals must be currently vaccinated for rabies and must show proof upon entering or leaving the state.
Animals over 3 months old need to be tattooed, microchipped, spayed/neutered and registered by local police. Despite having these requirements, there is no limit on how many pets you can own at one time (aside from your landlord’s restrictions). Arizona Dog licenses are required if you live within the limits of any incorporated city and county, otherwise they are only necessary outside those limits; cat licenses aren’t necessary regardless of residency. Animal owners must keep their dogs on leashes or restrained by an enclosure outside city limits.
Animals over 3 months old must be vaccinated against rabies, wear a collar with their owner’s name and address on it at all times, and have a microchip inserted for identification purposes. If the animal is spayed / neutered then it doesn’t need to wear its ID tag but that is not mandatory.
Arkansas All animals are required to have current vaccinations that are up-to-date. Additionally, they must also have licenses if living within the incorporation of any given city. No limit exists on how many pets you can own provided your landlord permits this. California Dogs under 4 months old aren’t required to be, but after this time they are required to be vaccinated against rabies. Cats aren’t necessary but are strongly recommended.
All dogs must wear their licenses on a collar at all times and should have an ID tag attached. If the animal is spayed / neutered then it needs only the license but not the ID tag.
Colorado All animals over 3 months old must be currently vaccinated for rabies by a veterinarian or other licensed individual who can demonstrate proof of vaccination. They also need to have annual vaccinations after this first one, if possible.
Dogs are required to be restrained outside city limits so that they do not wander around loose where they could potentially cause problems with people or other animals. No limit on how many pets you can own within your household as long as your landlord permits this.
Connecticut All dogs must be legally licensed and vaccinated against rabies. Cats should also be vaccinated but it is not required by law at this time. Dogs should always wear their license on a collar and tags, even if the animal is spayed / neutered; this also applies to cats as well. As of 2012, any dog or cat older than 3 months old must receive a tattoo (microchip implants are an accepted alternative).
Delaware All dogs must have current vaccinations at all times and be licenced within 30 days of moving into a city. These licenses can only be obtained from the local Department of Health office where you live; they cannot be obtained from cities outside your county if that’s where you’re living.
Dogs outside city limits should be kept on leashes or restrained in some other way; dogs inside the city’s limits don’t need to be leashed but can’t roam around where they please either. Cats do not require vaccinations and aren’t necessary even inside the city’s limits (unless you like having your kitty wear a collar). You can own any number of pets that your landlord permits, regardless of whether they’re vaccinated.
