What Are The Benefits Of Animals?

Connor Pet Health - we know that keeping our pets happy, healthy and engaged is extremely important part of all of our lives.

There’s been a lot of talk lately about the benefits of having animals around. Some people say that they increase our sense of well-being, while others argue that they help us learn more and improve our communication skills. But what does science say? Are there really any benefits to owning or interacting with animals?

Here Are Just A Few Of The Ways That Animals Can Help Improve Our Lives

Lower Blood Pressure: Studies have shown that simply petting a dog or cat can significantly reduce your blood pressure. In fact, in one study of 260 hypertensive patients, half the group was given weekly instruction in pet care and interaction. After six months, those who had pets showed significant decreases in both diastolic and systolic blood pressure compared to the control group that did not have pets.

Increased Immunity: A study at Colorado State University used college students exposed to a common cold virus and quarantined for five days (to ensure they were exposed to the virus). Those exposed to cats and dogs during their quarantine had only a 10 percent likelihood of becoming ill while 35 percent those exposed to other non-household pets became ill. There is also evidence that dog-owning children are less likely to develop illnesses like asthma or other respiratory problems than children without dogs at home.

Reduce Stress: When pet owners were surveyed about the impact their pets had on their stress levels, they rated coming home to their pet as very helpful in reducing stress and providing comfort during stressful times. Petting an animal has been shown to reduce cortisol (the hormone associated with stress) by more than 10 percent while stroking or talking softly to a cat lowers it even more. One study showed that after only 20 minutes of playing with a friendly, live goldfish, participants’ blood pressure returned almost all the way back to normal following a stressful situation (giving a speech).

Improved Mood: Owning a pet has been shown to improve moods by reducing stress and depression while improving self-esteem. One study found that visits to an animal shelter improved the mood of 80 percent of women suffering from major depression. A new dog or cat can also be effective in helping people recover from depression, while senior citizens with pets have fewer doctor visits because they are less likely to suffer from physical health problems like high blood pressure, heart disease or obesity.

Reduce Loneliness: Pet ownership promotes social interaction which can help reduce feelings of loneliness. Spending time with an animal provides opportunities for conversation with other pet owners, taking your friend for a walk, visiting friends who also have animals or joining a pet-related group or club.

As we do with any other aspect of our lives, it’s up to us to make the best out of every day and find joy in what we have. Animals can help us get there by providing companionship, unconditional love and a sense of security that many people don’t otherwise experience on their own.
