Is having a dog beneficial or detrimental?

Connor Pet Health - we know that keeping our pets happy, healthy and engaged is extremely important part of all of our lives.

Do you have a dog? If so, does it cause more stress or less stress for you to take care of him on a day-to-day basis? It’s hard to say. On one hand, people who own dogs are statistically happier and report higher levels of well-being than those without pets. But on the other hand, some studies show that owning a dog can lead to increased feelings of anxiety and depression due to the responsibility that comes with caring for another living being.  The answer is different from person to person because not everyone has the same lifestyle as others.

Here are the Benefits to Owning a Dog

Dogs make great companions and friends

They can be very calming and comforting

Dog owners get more exercise than non-dog owners on average

Many dogs are trained as service animals to assist people who have disabilities, illnesses, or are unable to care for themselves

Their fur acts as an insulator against both heat and cold

They act as physical therapy for their owners

Many dogs are trained to provide support, balance, and stability for people who find it difficult to stand

Dogs can be trained to alert their owners of impending seizures when one is about to happen (seizure response dogs)

They can help with socialization skills in children with autism or other special needs

Dogs provide emotional support for veterans returning from war zones where they witnessed traumatic events like combat

Pets (especially cats but also, including dogs) often live many years longer than the average life expectancy of most breeds of dog because humans tend to take good care of them so they can live longer

They provide companionship to the elderly who would otherwise be lonely and isolated

Dogs make great alarm systems when properly trained; they react to sounds that humans don’t usually hear until its too late (like choking or smoke/fire alarms)

They reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, and loneliness in their owners, often without even knowing it by wagging their tails or licking their owners’ faces

Dog ownership has been shown to improve people’s mental health status more than any other pet type

People with pets are less likely to be injured in an accident for example due to slipping on ice because they have a furry friend at home waiting for them who will act as an emotional, physical, and motivational support system

Dogs can act as emotional support for people who are suicidal

They offer companionship to children with autism (more than any other pet type)

People who walk their dogs are more likely to meet new people through the dog because many other dog owners will say “hello” while passing by

Adopting a rescue pet has shown to reduce stress in owners and improve mental health status. Dog ownership (and general animal interaction) has also been shown to reduce symptoms of depression and increase overall well-being

Dogs help train children how to be responsible and caring about others/animals

Here are some Negative Effects:

There could be some serious consequences for those who don’t have time to take care of a pet or live in an apartment where pets aren’t allowed. These people may start feeling lonely and isolated. Dogs can also take up a lot of time to groom, feed, train, exercise, and take care of in general!

Another negative effect is the spread of diseases like heart worms (which can cause severe health problems) and rabies (which is often deadly). Every day, thousands of people buy themselves puppies without thinking about the responsibility that comes with owning one. The truth is that like any pet, dogs need care and attention every single day to keep them healthy. This means lots of time spent cleaning up after your pup; training it; buying food for it; taking it out for walks or runs in public places (which may also mean you having to pay extra money on products like Doggie Day Care); finding someone else to look over your dog when you go on vacation; and so much more.

Some people may develop allergies to their own dogs, especially if the breed has short hair or a lot of dander (dust that comes from sebaceous glands in animals).

There are many other negatives effects when owning a dog! For example, there can be an increased odds of having osteoarthritis for those who own large breeds like German Shepherds or Golden Retrievers due to heavy weight pushing down on your joints every day. Another issue with owning these bigger breeds is hip dysplasia – which means poor development at birth causing painful arthritis later in life. Lastly, larger dogs also suffer from obesity which can lead to cardiovascular disease.

You may be wondering if a dog is right for you and your family. There are many benefits to owning a pet, but there can also be some drawbacks as well. We’ve listed both the pros and cons of having a canine companion in this post so that it will help you make an informed decision about whether or not adding one to your family would be beneficial.
